If there is one thing time has taught us, it’s that change is inevitable. Sometimes it’s bad, but sometimes it’s good - especially in the fashion world. Prom is not something new to American teenagers. Since the 1950s, young kids have been suiting up, dressing up, spiking the punch bowls and dancing the night away.
Prom and the idea of it hasn’t changed, but the styles that scream PROM have, and we should probably be grateful for that. No offense, Mom, but thank goodness that poufy 1980s metallic silver dress is no longer in style. Maybe, decades will cross paths and in the next 20 years we will be back to metallic pouf sleeves. For now though, we are going to focus on the gorgeous dresses trending in 2016...
A perfect example of “coming back in style”, this 1970s trend is back and it’s better than before. A break from the traditional dress, the crop top is decorative and will absolutely accentuate those lady curves. It’s no wonder this trend is all over the runway and the red carpet.
Meeooww! This trend is hot mama status. With that being said, some schools' dress codes may not approve. However, if they do - those prom dates better watch out! Not all dresses with cut outs are revealing, some are tastefully done with just a small opening, or sheer mesh to cover. These types of cut outs might be more fitting for high school prom, but no matter the cut out, this accent is bound to grab some attention.
This might be the best way to show skin without pushing the limits of school dress code. Plus, there are quite a few open back combinations, leaving wiggle room for this cut. If dancing the night away is the plan that wiggle room is going to be extremely important!
20th century Hollywood meets 2016 glam girl. These high slits provide the perfect flirty, yet sophisticated touch to any floor length gown. Break out that self-tanner for this dress, ladies!
Now, you see it…now, you don’t! Nude or sheer illusions often are intricately decorated with beads, lace or sequins. The illusion can be seen in the top of the dress near the neckline, or nearing the bottom of the skirt. These details will absolutely add an organic, decorative touch that is bound to turn heads.
Spring has sprung, and what says spring more than flowers? Nothing, which is exactly why, this prom season, bold floral patterns are finding their place on everything from: long flowing ball gowns, short fun dresses, to long flowing skirts paired with lace or colorful tops, like the crop tops mentioned above. Girl power and flower power - double the trouble, double the fun!
Surely, in twenty years or so, your kids won’t be able to poke fun at your prom pictures in any of these styles! Let’s leave the laughing to grandma and grandpa’s prom pictures, they can take it.
Prom is around the corner, and those high school hallways have got to be buzzing. “Who’s going with who?” “What color is your dress?” “What’s the plans before and after?” The major question on everyone’s minds is not who, but rather, how? How did he/she ask you to prom?!
Word on the street is the “promposal” is the new proposal. Well, that seems a bit drastic, but guys, you know those girls are going to expect some type of clever gesture; girlfriend or not. Make sure you don’t fall short; hey, you may even end up viral with these 5 simple, yet thoughtful ways to make sure she says, “Yes”… to prom, that is.
Whether it’s pizza, candy or donuts, food is always a good way to the heart. These donuts are sweet, literally and figuratively, and perfect before the morning bell. She’ll have breakfast, you’ll have a prom date and by the end of the day, everyone will know about this promposal. I’m sure the folks down at the donut shop don’t mind going the extra mile, making this idea easy as pie...I mean donuts.
In this category when I say animals, I am referring to stuffed animals. I said simple, remember? Grab a poster, some markers and stuffed animal of your choice. Say something along the lines of “Prom would be un-bearable without you,” or like the photo below, interchange “un-bearable” with “ruff.” They get to keep the stuffed animal and the sign, reminding them of the romantic moment. The best part? The stuffed animal is the most expensive part!
I love this idea for any athletic girls. Flowers, candy and stuffed animals are sweet, but they may not always impress girls who aren’t your typical “girly girl.” This “can I steal you for prom” written on home plate is incredibly clever. Maybe if the girl is a cheerleader and the guy asking is a football jock, something like, “Can I tackle prom with you” written on a football might be cute as well. Play up your athletic bond!
As mentioned above, not all girls get overly impressed with flowers and candy. If she is a country kind of gal, then muddy trucks and boys in cowboy hats may be more of what floats her boat. You could do like this guy in the photo below… it seems like he had fun prepping.
Maybe you don’t need muddy trucks, or sports puns, sometimes you just need to mix a little work with some creative brainpower.
Anything that seems like it took more than thirty seconds of thought and ten seconds of execution will make your potential prom date a definite, “yes.” Use those sharp minds and think outside the box; you won’t regret it!
